My 200th post!

I was cleaning out a closet the other day and came across this, a picture of a poster I drew in college for an aborted competition. While the competition fell through, at least I got credit for the work in my illustration class. This is pen and ink with watercolor. As a side note, I wrote the words Molsen Golden in very tiny letters up and down the cliffs to add a bit of texture.

Armed with a new iPad and Sketchbook Pro, I present to you my first quick still life using those tools. A sippy cup sitting on a cloth. This thing will force me into a more painterly style while using it, although probably not for my finished cartoons done with ink and paper.

Rare Caricature

Here is a look at a couple of caricatures that were part of a larger project I did long ago for some gals at work. They wanted the entire finance staff caricatured as a gift for their supervisor. They each ended up as a ‘President’ on a single cartoon $3 bill, were all combined into one full color sheet as if it had just come off the press at the Federal Reserve, which was then framed.

Here’s a cartoon I cranked out today for an emergency client request. We’re getting swamped here at Wiz Studios lately, so I drew most of it, scanned, then duplicated, flipped, and merged to save some time.

An eagle on a motorcycle simply has to be an adult beverage design. Suggest the United States flag in the background with a few stars and stripes and you have yourself a label for an American lager.

This turned out much nicer than the version I originally had in my head. The design or drawing process that takes on a life of it’s own and dictates the direction of the project is fascinating and strange at the same time.

Well, when I posted the last couple of labels, I said there was nothing left in the pipeline, and at the time that was true. But apparently there are still a few designs left in my head that are clamoring to get out and I really can’t say for certain when this design theme of mine will come to an end.

On each of the labels, I have tried to keep the design as consistent as possible with the theme: fonts, color, secondary elements, even the border design. I haven’t always been as successful as I would have liked.

As a reminder to those of you who have asked, all of these label designs are created in Illustrator, 100% vector format and fully scalable.

There are no more of these in the pipeline, so this will be the last installment of my cartoon series of liquor labels for at least some time. I hope you’ve enjoyed them as much as I have.
