Playing With Clay

I just became aware of an awesome (and free!) 3D program called Sculptris. It’s seems to be pretty powerful, considering the price you pay. And with just a few hours of fiddling with it, starting with the default ball of clay, this is what I was able to create. Loads of fun.

iPad sketch

Armed with a new iPad and Sketchbook Pro, I present to you my first quick still life using those tools. A sippy cup sitting on a cloth. This thing will force me into a more painterly style while using it, although probably not for my finished cartoons done with ink and paper.

New Toys

New phone, new toys. I think this is one of the coolest things out there when you consider how easily and accurately information can be exchanged in the blink of an eye. No need to type anymore or risk information being garbled during input. I need to get stickers of this for the back of my business card, have t-shirts made, etc.

Celtic Knot

This design is a Celtic knot created in Illustrator for the iPhone game I’m helping out with. The programmers gave me the design and I recreated it in Illustrator with a little web research. It’s a fairly straightforward technique, but requires a bit of patience. I’ve added an ‘exploded’ example to show how the under/over illusion is created. Note that the topmost stroke has rounded caps to overlap and hide the ever-so-slightly-visible seams beneath where the paths have been cut apart and butt together.

Zodiac Crayons

Like every other child on the planet, crayons were my first drawing medium, and as an artist, they hold a very special place in my heart. Diem Chau has taken crayons to a completely new place that I could have never gone. In my mind’s eye, I see picking one of these up and having to fight the overwhelming inspiration to draw with it. By the way, but my favorite is my sign.
